How we raise our puppies

PUPPY TRAINING

Our puppies are with us for 8 weeks before they move to their forever homes. During this time, we put a lot of time into their training and exposure, to help the puppies grow into adaptable family pets. The puppies are raised in the house with us. We take time off work when we have puppies, so that someone is home with them everyday.

During the first 2 weeks of life, we expose the puppies to a lot of different sounds, such as hair dryers and the vacuum. This helps desensitise the puppies to noise, so they know it is a regular part of life. We are constantly handling the puppies during this time, as we help mum with feed time every 2 hours.

At 2 weeks of age, we begin handling the puppies more around their face, mouth and ears. We also start regular nail trims from now, so they are quite used to it by 8 weeks!

By 4- 5 weeks of age the puppies are starting to walk and play. We give them lots of toys that make squeaky and crinkly sounds, and they have a ball pit they can play in. We give them different textures to walk on (eg rustling plastic, shallow dishes of water). Around this time we also start taking the puppies on short car drives in smaller groups of 2 or 3 puppies. This helps the puppies get used to the car with their siblings, so that their first car trip is not when they leave with their forever families.

Around 5 weeks old, the puppies are spending more time outside during the day. We love all animals so have plenty of friends for the puppies to interact with! The chickens, ducks and geese hang around with the puppies. We also carry the puppies around to meet our horses and cows.

We really try to expose the puppies to as much as possible during this important time in their development!
