Health Testing

HEALTH TESTING

All of our girls have health testing performed prior to breeding, to ensure they are suitable for breeding, and to help pass on good traits to the puppies. The health tests are listed below, with an explanation of why these tests are important.

  • Hip and Elbow Scoring: This is for checking for the risk of hip and elbow dysplasia. For this test, xrays are taken of the hips and elbows. A specialist veterinary radiologist reviews the xrays and gives them a score. The scores are compared to breed averages and the lower the score, the better.
  • Heart Test: Our girls have been examined by a specialist veterinary cardiologist to ensure they are clear for heart murmur, arrythmia and heart disease.
  • Eye Test: Our girls have received a full ophthalmic exam at the Animal Eye Clinic and they are clear of retinal dysplasia, hereditary cataract and progressive retinal atrophy
  • Genetic testing: The girls have a DNA profile performed by Orivet. This DNA profile tests for the most common diseases occurring Golden Retrievers. We use this profile to compare with stud male dogs, checking for recessive genes so that puppies we breed will not have any of these genetic diseases.
  • Pedigree: The breeding pedigree shows family lines many generations back. This allows for traceback, to avoid inbreeding. Penny's mother was imported from Hungary to bring fresh genetics into Australia
  • Regular Veterinary Checks: our girls receive regular checks at the vet, and are up to date with their vaccinations, tick, flea, worming and heartworm prevention

All of our girls have fantastic test results, and the results for each girl are shown on their profiles. Certificates are available on request.
